DANBURY, CT -- After holding the University of Massachusetts Boston women's basketball team to only 16 points in the first half, Western Connecticut State University turned up the defensive pressure limiting the Beacons to 10 points in the second half to run away with a 59-26 victory Saturday afternoon at Feldman Arena.
With the victory, WestConn earns the \#1 seed in the upcoming Little East Conference Tournament and will host the Semifnial and Championship rounds on Friday and Saturday, February 26th and 27th.
Junior Heather Lee (Seymour, CT) led the WestConn offensive charge with 14points, followed by junior Melissa Teel (Hamden, CT) with 12 points, and senior Katie Moffo (Southington, CT) with 10. Teel also grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds to record her 21st double-double of the season.
WestConn controlled the action early, taking a 10-2 lead after the game's first five minutes.
With just under two minutes to play in the half, a jumper by Lee extended the WestConn lead to 31-12, and the Colonials went into the locker room with a 31-16 lead at intermission.
WestConn again controlled the pace of play to start the second half scoring the first 17 points to build a 48-16 lead and holding UMass Boston scoreless for the first six minutes of the half.
A layup by junior Karli Spera (Wolcott, CT) at the 3:27 mark pushed the WestConn lead to 59-22, and the Colonials eased up down the stretch for a 59-26 victory.
With the win, WestConn closes out the regular season with a 20-5 record overall and 11-3 in the LEC. It's the third straight season the Colonials finished with 20 or more victories. UMass Boston closed out the season at 4-21 overall and 0-14 in the LEC.
