BOSTON, MA - Freshman swing player Evyn Gregory-Stewart (Leonia, NJ) registered a double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds in her collegiate debut to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston women's basketball team over visiting Eastern Nazarene College, 80-51, today in the First Round of the 2008 UMass Boston Tip-Off Classic at the Clark Athletic Center on the UMass Boston campus. The Beacons improve to 1-0 on the season, while the Crusaders fall to 0-1 in the season opener for both squads. UMB will take on City College of New York on November 15 at 3:00 p.m. in the championship game after CCNY defeated MIT, 59-50, earlier in the day. ENC will take on MIT in the 1:00 p.m. consolation match-up.

Junior guard Christine Tucker (Winchester, MA) converted a pair of free throws to pull Eastern Nazarene to within 3-2 with 18:58 to play in the first half, but that would be as close as it would get for the rest of the day. UMass Boston went on to take a 32-9 advantage for its largest lead of the first half with 5:45 to go, fueled by 10 points from Gregory-Stewart and eight from senior forward Leanne Meninger (Everett, MA). The Beacons owned a 44-21 halftime lead, thanks in part to a 21-4 advantage on points off turnovers.

UMass Boston maintained a 53-27 lead with 16:12 remaining in the second half, before the Crusaders scored six unanswered points to cut the deficit to 53-33 with 12:36 showing on the second half clock. The Beacons held Eastern Nazarene off and went on a 25-9 outburst, paced by eight points from Gregory-Stewart, to give them their largest lead of the contest at 78-42 with 4:37 remaining in the game. The Crusaders closed out the game with a 9-2 run, including six points from sophomore forward Victoria Sontag (Mount Vernon, NH), to set the final at 80-51.

Gregory-Stewart also added three assists, two steals and a pair of blocks to her afternoon, while sophomore forward Cammy Brown (Malden, MA) just missed a double-double with 16 points on 7-11 from the field and nine rebounds in addition to a steal in just 19 minutes of action. Meninger finished with 12 points and five rebounds and sophomore guard Norma Cumbee (Malden, MA) contributed with 10 points, four assists, three boards, two steals and a blocked shot.

Tucker poured in a game-high 23 points to lead Eastern Nazarene and added four assists, two rebounds, a steal and a block, while Sontag netted 14 points to go with four rebounds, two assists and a steal. Junior guard Amanda Remmel registered a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
