BOSTON, MA - Freshman guard Colleen Hooper (Mansfield, MA) netted a game-high 15 points to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston women's basketball team past the College of Saint Joseph's (NY), 65-38, in the opening round of the 2010 UMass Boston Tip-Off Classic at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston. With the win, the Beacons improve to 2-0 on the season, their best start since 2007-08 season. The loss drops the Bears to 0-1 on the year.
The Beacons jumped out to a 29-20 halftime lead behind seven points and six rebounds from freshman guard Kendra Mosley (Indian Head, MD). Both team struggled with keeping possession, combining for 29 turnovers in the first stanza. UMass Boston was able to convert nine points off of 15 Bear turnovers to equal the halftime margin.
In the second stanza, the Beacons continued to keep the backcourt pressure on St. Joseph's, scoring 20 points off of 18 turnovers to help the hosts coast to the 65-36 win. Hooper netted 12 of her 15 points in the half on 5-9 shooting while senior forward Cammy Brown (Malden, MA) chipped in with nine points in the frame.
Brown finished the game two rebounds shy of notching a double-double, netting 11 points to go along with eight boards. Sophomore forward Elizabeth Dow (Marshfield, MA) grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds while Mosley finished the game with seven points and nine rebounds.
For the Bears, junior guard Caitlyn Kakavas (Bayside, NY) and freshman guard Kelly McNamee (Maspeth, NY) each scored seven points while junior forward Joanna Marciniec (Glendale, NY) recorded a team-high of eight rebounds.
The Beacons will play tomorrow vs. Rutgers-Newark, 75-68 winners over Drew University, for the Tip-Off Classic Championship at 3:00 p.m. St. Joseph's will square off in the Tip-Off consolation match at 1:00 p.m. vs. Drew.
