WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS TO RUTGERS-NEWARK IN TIP-OFF CLASSIC TITLE GAME, 52-43

BOSTON, MA - Junior guard Jared Tactuk (Wayne, NJ) scored 13 of her game-high 18 points during a crucial 17-0 second half run to lead the Rutgers University-Newark women's basketball team over host University of Massachusetts Boston, 52-43, this afternoon to capture the 2010 UMass Boston Tip-off Classic championship at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston. The Scarlet Raiders improve to a perfect 3-0 on the season, while the Beacons fall to 2-1. Drew University defeated College of Saint Joseph's Brooklyn, 84-48, in the consolation game earlier in the day.
Rutgers-Newark erased a 36-27 deficit with 12:18 to play in the game after scoring 17 unanswered points and 25 of the game's final 32 points to come away with the victory. Tactuk drained three straight three-pointers to knot the contest at 36-36 with 8:44 showing in the second half, before freshman guard Courtney Woodard (Plainfield, NJ) made a steal and scored on a lay-up to give the Scarlet Raiders their first lead since early in the first half. Tactuk later hit another trifecta and converted one of two free throws to cap the run and put Rutgers-Newark on top at 44-36 with 6:02 remaining in the contest. UMass Boston could not get closer than within six points the rest of the way and the Scarlet Raiders enjoyed their biggest lead at 52-38 on a Tactuk lay-up with 1:33 to go in the game.
The Beacons held a 6-5 edge three minutes into the first half before going on a 16-4 burst, led by a pair of three-pointers from freshman guard Shelby Buck (Greenfield, OH) to give the home team its biggest lead of the afternoon at 22-9 with 9:14 showing in the opening half. Rutgers-Newark responded with 11 straight points, including five points from senior forward Jaleesa Coleman (Pleasantville, NJ), to close to within 22-20 with 6:44 to play in the half. UMass Boston maintained its lead into the intermission with a 27-22 advantage.
Sophomore guard/forward Elisa Ogawa (Yamanashi, Japan) converted a lay-up with 12:18 to go in the second stanza for the Beacons' largest lead of the second half at 36-27, but it would be their last points for the next seven minutes.
Tactuk, who was named the Tournament Most Valuable Player, was 5-12 from three-point range for the Scarlet Raiders and added three rebounds, while All-Tournament selection Lori Nieves (North Plainfield, NJ) pulled down nine rebounds to go with eight points, two assists, a pair of steals and a game-high four blocks. Sophomore guard Kristen Venning (Clifton, NJ) chipped in with a game-high 12 rebounds and five steals in addition to seven points and an assist.
Buck finished with a career-high 13 points and added three rebounds, two assists and a steal for UMass Boston, while freshman guard/forward and All-Tournament selection Kendra Mosley (Indian Head, MD) contributed with nine points, seven boards, four steals and three assists. Ogawa was named to the All-Tournament team as well and chipped in with seven points, eight rebounds, an assist and a steal. . The Beacons will be in action again on Tuesday, November 23 when they travel to Fitchburg, MA to take on Fitchburg State College at 5:30 p.m., while Rutgers-Newark hosts City College of New York on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.
