JERSEY CITY, NJ - Junior guard Carolina Garcia (Plainfield, NJ) scored 17 points, including a key three-pointer down the stretch, to lead the New Jersey City University women's basketball team over visiting University of Massachusetts Boston, 62-60, today in the First Round of the Gothic Knight Tip-Off Tournament at Charlie Brown Court on the New Jersey City campus in Jersey City, NJ. The Beacons fall to 1-2 on the season in their first-ever meeting with the Gothic Knights and first-ever game played in the state of New Jersey, while NJCU improves to 1-2.

UMB will take on the United States Merchant Marine Academy, which lost in the earlier game to Stevens Institute of Technology, 69-46, tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. in the consolation game, while New Jersey City meets Stevens Tech. in the championship tilt at 4:00 p.m.

UMass Boston took a 53-52 edge when freshman swing player Evyn Gregory-Stewart (Leonia, NJ) knocked down a three-pointer at 6:23 of the second half, but a jumper by junior forward Shayla Daniels (Jersey City, NJ), followed by a steal by Daniels, who dished to freshman point guard Nidia Carmona (Elizabeth, NJ) for a fast break lay-up with 5:17 left in the game, gave the Gothic Knights a 56-53 lead. New Jersey City maintained a 61-57 margin with 4:03 to go in the contest, before Gregory-Stewart drained her fifth trifecta of the day to pull the Beacons to within 61-60 with 2:58 showing on the clock. The game remained scoreless for the next 2:48 until freshman guard Ebony Cunningham (East Orange, NJ) was fouled and converted one of two free throws. She missed her second shot, but got the rebound, only to miss the lay-up and then turned the ball over to UMass Boston with seven seconds left in the contest. The Beacons' Norma Cumbee (Malden, MA) took a jumper with no time remaining, but it failed to go in as NJCU came away with the win.

UMass Boston bolted out to a 13-6 advantage with 13:27 remaining in the first half, but the Gothic Knights charged back with 14 unanswered points, fueled by five points from Daniels, to take a 20-13 lead with 9:53 to play in the opening half. NJCU later increased its lead to 32-22 with 4:39 to go in the half, but the Beacons closed out the stanza with an 11-5 burst, paced by eight points from freshman forward Sharmayne Sturgis (Cambridge, MA), to cut the deficit to 37-33 at the intermission.

New Jersey City later owned a 43-39 lead with 15:52 left in the second half, before UMass Boston scored five straight points, including a three-pointer from Gregory-Stewart, to take a 44-43 edge with 12:46 showing on the second half clock. The Gothic Knights responded with a 7-1 run to take a 50-45 lead with 10:34 to play, but the Beacons scored the next five points, including another trey from Gregory-Stewart and a lay-up to knot the contest at 50-50 at the 8:16 mark of the second session.

Garcia added five rebounds, three assists and three steals to her afternoon, while freshman guard Lashawn Overton (Jersey City, NJ) came off the bench to net 17 points on 8-14 from the floor, dish for a game-high seven assists, grab a pair of rebounds and make a steal. Daniels nearly posted a double-double with 11 points and nine boards to go with three steals and Cunningham pulled down 12 rebounds and added seven points, six steals and three assists.

Stewart-Gregory led UMass Boston with 17 points on and was 5-10 from three-point range in addition to ripping down eight rebounds and blocking a shot, while Sturgis posted her second straight double-double of the year with 14 points and 15 rebounds to go with an assist, a block and a steal. Cumbee chipped in with eight points, five assists and three steals, while sophomore point guard Stephanie Vasquez (Salem, MA) contributed with five points, a career-high nine rebounds, three assists and three steals.
