FITCHBURG, MA - The Fitchburg State women's basketball team collected an impressive 70-38 victory over UMass Boston in non-conference action this evening.

Senior Stephanie Payette (Townsend, Ma) led all scorers with a game-high 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field. Freshman Melissa Proffitt (Hubbardston, Ma) added seven points and nine rebounds, while sophomore Kari Averill (Barre, Vt) chipped in with seven points and four steals.

Sophomore Sharmayne Sturgis (Cambridge, MA) led the UMass Boston attack, totaling a team-high 16 points and nine boards. Sturgis was 4-of-8 from the field, while hitting 8-of-11 from the free throw stripe to pace the Beacons. Classmate Norma Cumbee (Malden, MA) aided the Beacons with six points and two rebounds.

Fitchburg State grabbed a four point advantage in the first half of play as Payette connected for ten first half points. The Falcons were up by nine midway through the frame as Payette and sophomore Molly Maloney (Taunton, MA) connected for back-to-back jumpers at the 11:15 mark, but UMass Boston battled back late in the period as Sturgis tallied five points in the final three minutes of play to close the Falcon lead to 32-28.

In the second half, Fitchburg State exploded for 38 points to secure its third victory of the season. Payette led the charge again with eight points, while sophomore Kim Duprey (Bernardston, MA) and freshman Jamie Bertilson (Ridgefield, CT) each netted six. The Fitchburg State defense was tenacious all night, limiting the Beacons to only ten second-half points, while forcing 32 turnovers with 22 steals.

Fitchburg State (3-2, 0-0 MASCAC) will be in action again on next Tuesday as it hosts Nichols College at 7 p.m. UMass Boston (1-4, 0-0 LEC) will travel to Emerson College next Tuesday at 7 p.m.
