WOMEN'S BASKETBALL COMEBACK FALLS SHORT IN 55-51 LOSS TO MEDGAR EVERS

MORRISTOWN, NJ - Senior forward Shakimba Pierre (Brooklyn, NY) netted 19 points to lead the Medgar Evers College women's basketball team over University of Massachusetts Boston, 55-51, tonight at the Hilton Thanksgiving Tournament in Morristown, NY on the campus of host College of Saint Elizabeth. The Cougars improve to 2-3 on the season, while the Beacons fall to 1-3.
The teams stayed within five points of each other through the first 13 minutes of the first half with Medgar Evers holding a 17-16 edge with 7:12 to go. The Cougars ripped off 12 unanswered points, paced by six points from Pierre, to take a 29-16 lead with 63 seconds left in the first half. Sophomore forward Molly Piette (Webster, MA) canned a three-pointer to halt the run and pull UMass Boston to within 29-19 with 30 seconds remaining in the opening stanza, but freshman guard Shantae Goggins (Brooklyn, NY) closed out the half with a jumper for Medgar Evers at the buzzer to give it a 31-19 lead at the intermission.
The Cougars later increased their lead to 44-28 with 8:03 showing in the second half, but the Beacons went on a furious 23-7 stretch, fueled by 10 points from Piette, including a trio of three-pointers, to pull even at 51-51 with 1:17 left in the contest. Pierre restored the lead for Medgar Evers with a lay-up with 52 seconds to go in the game. UMass Boston had a chance to tie with five seconds left, but junior guard/forward Kristen Penney's (West Roxbury, MA) lay-up attempt was swatted away by sophomore center Tiffany Thompson (Bronx, NY). Nicole McClain was fouled for the Cougars to put her on the line for two successful free throws to give them the final margin of victory.
Pierre finished the night shooting 9-15 from the floor to go with 10 rebounds for a double-double and added two steals and an assist for Medgar Evers. Goggins netted 15 points on 7-10 from the field to go with five boards, two assists and a steal, while Thompson scored 11 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, rejected four shots, made one steal and handed out an assist.
Piette led the Beacons with 14 points, including four three-pointers to go with seven rebounds and an assist off the bench, while senior guard/forward Caroline Ashe (West Roxbury, MA) contributed with 13 points, two rebounds, a steal and an assist. Freshman guard Kate Levy (Falmouth, MA) chipped in with 10 points, four rebounds, three assists, two steals and a blocked shot.
UMass Boston will be in action again tomorrow when they take on Saint Joseph's College of Brooklyn, NY at 11:00 a.m. in the consolation game, while the Cougars face College of Saint Elizabeth in the championship tilt at 1:00 p.m.
