BOSTON, MA - The Emerson College women's basketball team (6-2) placed three players in double figures led by Maud Okrah's (Rutland, MA) 24 points to defeat University of Massachusetts Boston (1-4) 74-47 in a non-conference basketball game at Emerson's Piano Row Gymnasium. Okrah, coming off a Tournament MVP performance in the Gallaudet University Invitational Tournament continued her strong play as she pulled down eight rebounds and had four steals in the game. Emerson never trailed in the contest although the Beacons kept the game close for the first seven minutes. A three-point shot by sophomore guard Norma Cumbee (Malden, MA) brought the Beacons to within 13-10. Emerson then went on a 7-0 run to increase the lead to 10 points keyed by five points and two assists by freshman Rachel Kaye (Wakefield, MA). A three-point shot by sophomore guard Stephanie Vasquez (Salem, MA) pulled the Beacons to within 22-15 with 9:15 remaining in the first half, but Emerson countered with an 8-0 run including four Kathy Andrade (Hull, MA) points. Emerson went on a 10-3 string to end the half. UMass Boston shrunk the lead to 17 points with 7:33 remaining in the game on a Leanne Meninger (Everett, MA) jumper, but the Beacons could pull no closer. In addition to Okrah, Kaye had 18 points for the Lions and added six assists in her first career start. Senior Lauren Vassallo (Oxford, CT) added 11 points an seven boards. Emerson's leading scorer, sophomore Lauren Zaniboni (San Diego, CA) had only four points but added 10 rebounds. Cumbee was the only Beacon in double figures with 11 points, and the Lions held the Beacons to .295 shooting from the field for the game. Emerson will next play Tuesday, December 9 when the Lions host Endicott in a non-conference contest at 7:00pm. UMass Boston will host Rhode Island College in a Little East Conference game Saturday December 6 at 1:00pm.
