CHESTNUT HILL, MA - Freshman guard Kate Levy (Falmouth, MA) scored all 13 of her points in the second half as the University of Massachusetts Boston women's basketball team shot 56.5% (13-23) during the stanza en-route to a 60-34 victory over host Wheelock College. The game was played this evening at the Donald E. Brunelli, Jr. Basketball Court on the campus of Pine Manor College in Chestnut Hill, MA. The Beacons even their record at 3-3 on the season, while the Wildcats fall to 0-3.
UMass Boston outscored Wheelock, 41-16 in the second half, while dominating the boards for the game by a margin of 44-24. The Beacons' defensive effort was also strong, holding the Wildcats to just 26% (13-50) shooting for the night.
UMass Boston held a slim 19-18 edge at halftime, before scoring the first nine points of the second half, while holding Wheelock scoreless for nearly eight minutes to take a 28-18 lead. Freshman guard Elizabeth Dow (Marshfield, MA) led the Beacons during the run with five points. Freshman guard Keneisha Milton (Boston, MA) put the Wildcats on the board in the second stanza with a layup at the 12:05 mark to pull them to within 28-20, but UMass Boston reeled off 13 straight points to complete a 22-2 stretch, behind 10 points from Levy, to take a 41-20 advantage with 8:17 showing in the second half. Wheelock would later close to within 43-24 with 7:16 left in the contest, but the Beacons put together a 12-2 run, paced by seven points from sophomore forward Molly Piette (Webster, MA), to take their biggest lead of the night at 55-26 with 3:35 remaining in the game.
UMass Boston owned a 3-2 lead in the first half, before the Wildcats scored six unanswered points to take an 8-3 lead with 13:17 to play in the stanza. The Beacons responded with a 16-2 burst, fueled by nine of junior forward Kristen Penney's (West Roxbury, MA) team-high 15 points, to take a 19-10 advantage with 5:44 to go in the half. Wheelock regrouped and came right back with eight straight points, capped by a three-point play by senior forward Sarah Brown (Plainville, CT), to enter the intermission down by just a point.
Penney added a career-high 10 rebounds to her night for her first career double-double to go with four assists and two steals for UMass Boston. Levy was a perfect 3-3 from three-point range and 4-4 from the line, while pulling down four rebounds, making two steals and blocking a shot. Senior guard Caroline Ashe (West Roxbury, MA) also contributed with 10 points and five boards in 21 minutes of action.
Brown led the Wildcats with a game-high 17 points to go with three steals, two assists and a rebound, while senior guard Elise Ordile (Waltham, MA) chipped in with eight points, two rebounds and four steals.
The Beacons will be in action again on Saturday, December 5 when they open the Little East Conference slate with Keene State College at 1:00 p.m. at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston, while Wheelock travels to Newton, MA to take on Lasell College at 1:00 p.m. on December 5.
