Nichols Sneaks by Women’s Hockey in Final Seconds of Regulation
HARRISVILLE, R.I. – Led by Megan Gerein Nichols College pulled off a dramatic 3-2 win over women's ice hockey with two seconds remaining in regulation on Friday night at Levy Rink in an ECAC East women's ice hockey matchup.
With the win, the Bison improve to 6-11-1 overall and 3-7-1 in the conference, while UMass Boston fell to 6-9-2 on the season and 4-7-1 in the ECAC East.
Nearly two periods went by before the puck found the back of the net. The Bison's Talia Hohmann put the hosts on the board with 14.5 left in the second period. Lisa Coskren stole the puck and sent the pass to Hohmann for the score.
The Beacons responded at 3:59 in the third as junior Emily LaRosa (Weymouth, Mass.) planted a shot from the top of the slot that made its way past the netminder on the low blocker side. She would get help from rookie Dylan Caron (Burrillville, R.I.).
Nichols grabbed the lead back at 13:50 as Grace Murphy rushed up the ice and found an open top corner. Sophomore Bridget Griffin helped setup the Bison score.
The game appeared to be headed into an extra session before Gerein provided the heroics with the power play marker. Gerein eluded the defender and wristed the game-winner after she received passes from Murphy and senior Mandy Manopla.
Between the pipes Tori Gianformaggio turned away 28 shots as senior Leah Hallett (Rocky Hill, Conn.) stopped 27 pucks.
Both teams took 30 shots with Nichols scoring once on six power play chances while the Beacons went 0-for-4.
Women's hockey returns to action tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Rye, N.Y. to face Manhattanville College at 2 p.m.
