BOSTON, Mass. – Led by a three-goal showing from Taylor Shepherd the Seahawks of Salve Regina University handed women's ice hockey a 6-1 ECAC East conference loss Saturday afternoon in the Clark Athletic Center Ice Arena.
With the loss the Beacons fall to 1-2-1 overall and in the conference, while Salve Regina improved to 4-2-0, 2-2-0 in the ECAC East.
Shepherd was absolutely dominant for Salve as the forward scored two power-play goals and one shorthanded goal. Her man-down goal was one of two for the Seahawks as Danielle Phalon also found the back of the net to cap off a three goal second period. Phalon also scored an even strength goal in the period.
UMass Boston initially broke the scoreless draw on an Emily Howard (Terryville, Conn.) power-play goal. The man-up goal marked the first of the season of the Beacons. Kelsey MacIsaac (Durham, N.H.) and Alli Greenberg (Stoughton, Mass.) each notched an assist on the then go-ahead goal.
Salve did manage to tie the game at 1-1 with 5:22 left in the first period. After the intermission, Salve's offense came alive and fired off three goals throughout the second period, before tallying two more in the third to skate away with the conference win.
Between the pipes Casey Schaejbe (Arlington, Mass.) did her best to keep the Beacons in the contest but the barrage of Seahawk shots proved too much. On the day, Salve posted 33 shots with a majority of those coming in the second and third frames. UMass totaled 22 shots on the day and led the first period and +4 advantage (8-4).
Salve Regina finished 2-for-5 on the power-play, while UMass Boston was 1-for-3 overall.
Women's Hockey returns to action next Friday when they travel to Norwich University for a 7 p.m. ECAC East conference game.
