BOSTON, Mass. – Trailing by two goals with less than a minute to play, women's ice hockey made it a one score game as Alli Greenberg (Stoughton, Mass.) scored an extra attacker power-play goal, but the last minute rally would fall short as Castleton State College hung on to earn a 4-3 ECAC East conference win over the Beacons Friday afternoon in the Clark Athletic Center Ice Arena.
With Friday's loss, the Beacons fell to 2-6-1, 2-4-1 in the ECAC East, while the victory marked the first-ever for the Spartans over UMB and improved their record to 5-1-1, 3-1-1 in the conference.
Scoring what would become the game-winning goal for Castleton was BriAnna Narodowy, her third of the season, at the 7:30 mark of the third period. Narodowy's goal stopped the Beacons run which at the time made it 3-2 in favor of the visitors.
Three of the Spartans four goals would came in the first 14 minutes of the first period. Anna Daniels broke the 0-0 draw with her sixth goal of the season at 2:51 of the opening frame. Narodowy then made it a two-goal game eight minutes later on her second tally of the season. The final goal of the first period belonged to Jade Werger on an unassisted play.
Trailing by three the Beacons entered the first intermission looking for answers. Once back on the ice, head coach Colleen Harris turned to sophomore netminder Kailyn Burke (Franklin, Mass.) to lift her team as she stepped in between the pipes. Casey Schaejbe (Arlington, Mass.) got the start in Friday's contest and made a total of nine saves in the first 20 minutes of play.
Burke closed out the final two frames and combined for 14 saves with the decision going to Schaejbe (1-6-1). For the Spartans they received a solid showing from netminder Paula Stephens who made a total of 37 stops to improve to 4-1-1 on the year.
Neither team would score a goal in the second period, setting-up a do-or-die third period for UMass Boston. In what has become their forte this season, the Beacons would start their comeback in the final period with a goal from Greenberg. The senior's fourth goal of the year was assisted by Kayla Kiernan (North Smithfield, Mass.) at 4:24.
Just a minute and three seconds later the Beacons got their second goal of the contest, this time with Sarahanne Cavolo (Roxbury, N.H.) finding the back of the net. Cavolo's goal marked the first of the year for the sophomore and was assisted by Courtney White (Medford, Mass.) and Dylan Caron (Burrillville, R.I.).
Needing just one more goal to tie the score at 3-3 the Beacons offense continued to pressure the Spartans back line. However, it was Castleton that would find the back of the net next, which proved to be the deciding one. Even with the late goal power-play goal (19:20) from Greenberg the Beacons were unable to get the crucial game-tying score.
On the day UMass led the contest in shots 40-27 and finished 1-for-5 on the power-play. Castleton State, who entered the game as the top power-play team in the ECAC East finished 0-for-3 on the man-up opportunities.
Women's Hockey returns to action tomorrow when they host New England College at 1 p.m. in an ECAC East conference game.
