Three Goal Third Pushes Salve Regina Past Women’s Hockey

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – With four different players each scoring once, and three of those goals coming in the third period, the Seagulls of Salve Regina University ended women's hockey five-game unbeaten streak as they defeated the Beacons by the final of 4-0 Friday evening at St. George's School Ice Rink.

Friday's loss dropped the Beacons record to 8-10-3 overall, 5-6-3 in the ECAC East.  Salve Regina pushed their overall record to 13-7-0, 9-4-0 in the conference.

In a very tight and heavily penalized contest the Beacons came out firing in the first period, but were unable to break the Salve goal line.  Sophomore netminder Kailyn Burke (Franklin, Mass.) was also solid through the first 20 minutes as she kept Salve off the scoreboard with her nine stops.

It was not until late in the second frame, that Salve was able to end the scoreless draw.  Sarah McCusker gave the Gulls the 1-0 advantage on the power-play at the 16:49 mark.

Trailing by one the Beacons looked to take control in the third period, which they did as they led the period 15-8 in shots.  However of those eight shots, Salve managed to drive home three goals, two even strength and one shorthanded.  On the other side of the ice, Ali Muehlbronner notched the shutout after totaling 33 saves on the night to improve her overall record to 13-7.

Offensively Kayla Kiernan (North Smithfield, R.I.) and Katie Loiselle (Glocester, R.I.) each recorded five shots on goal to lead the Beacons.  On the night UMB was 0-for-3, while Salve finished 1-for-6 on the power play.

Women's Hockey returns to action tomorrow when they travel to Holy Cross for a 4 p.m. ECAC East conference game.
