DURAN LEADS WOMEN'S HOCKEY OVER ST. MICHAEL'S, 3-2
Jan. 9, 2009
BOSTON, MA - Sophomore forward Lauren Duran (Woburn, MA) netted a pair of goals to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston women's ice hockey team over visiting Saint Michael's College, 3-2, this evening in an Eastern College Athletic Conference East contest at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston. The Beacons improve to 7-3-1 overall and 6-1-1 in ECAC East play, while the Purple Knights fall to 3-10-0 and 1-8-0.
Senior forward Maria Guanci (Everett, MA) took a feed from junior forward Sandy Parlato (Needham, MA) and junior defenseman Jacqui Villani (West Roxbury, MA) and potted her third goal of the season to give UMass Boston the eventual game-winner and a 3-2 margin on the power play at 2:58 of the third period.
Following a scoreless first period, senior forward Jess Tourville (Baltimore, VT) and junior forward Desiree Biron (Bow, NH) set up junior forward Meghan Sweezey (Lynnfield, MA) for her fourth goal of the year to give Saint Michael's a 1-0 edge with 5:54 gone in the second period, before sophomore blueliner Jazz Webber (Winslow, ME) found Duran for her first score of the night on the power play to knot the contest at 1-1 of the 10:32 mark of the middle period for the Beacons. Duran wasted no time with her team-leading ninth goal of the season when junior forward Maria Nasta (Andover, MA) assisted just 1:22 later for a 2-1 UMB lead at 11:54 of the second session. Sophomore forward Kelly Rose Losi (Milton, MA) set up senior forward Amy Schoon (Southborough, MA) for her first tally of the season to tie the game with 3:57 left in the second period for the Purple Knights, but that would be all the scoring for the visitors.
Freshman goaltender Leah Hallett (Rocky Hill, CT) stopped 34 shots to earn the victory for the Beacons, while sophomore Alysia Goldman (Bollston Lake, NY) made 30 saves for Saint Michael's.
UMass Boston will be in action again on Sunday, January 11 when it travels to Castleton, VT to take on Castleton State College at 2:00 p.m., while the Purple Knights travel to Manchester, NH on January 16 to play Saint Anselm College at 4:00 p.m.
