BOSTON, MA - Sophomore goalie Leah Hallett (Rocky Hill, CT) stopped 42 shots and junior defenseman Hannah Davis (Oakdale, MN) netted the game-winner with 2:21 to play to give the University of Massachusetts Boston women's ice hockey team a 2-1 victory over visiting Norwich University this afternoon in an Eastern College Athletic Conference East contest at the Clark Athletic Center rink on the campus of UMass Boston. The Beacons improve to 8-7-0 overall and 6-4-0 in ECAC East play, while the Cadets fall to 9-2-2 and 7-2-2.
Following two scoreless periods of play, the teams combined for three goals in the third period.
Junior forward Lauren Duran (Woburn, MA) found classmate Rachel Sousa (Woburn, MA) in the slot on the power play where she fed Davis for the score on the right corner of the crease at 17:39 of the third period to give UMass Boston a 2-1 edge. It was Davis' second tally of the year.
The Beacons opened the scoring when Nasta fed Sousa for her second goal of the season at the 7:46 mark of the third period for a 1-0 lead. Norwich erased the one-goal deficit when sophomore forward Julie Fortier (Saint-Malachie, Quebec) came away with a loose puck and netted a short-handed goal for her 11th of the campaign on the breakaway at the 12:36 mark of the final period to knot the score at 1-1.
Hallett stopped 14 shots in both the first and third periods to bookend a 15-save effort in the middle period for UMass Boston as the Cadets owned a 43-22 shot advantage for the late afternoon. Junior goaltender Cindy Fortin (Quebec City, Quebec) made 20 saves for Norwich.
The Beacons will be in action again tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. at the Clark Athletic Center when they host Castleton State College, while the Cadets travel to Rye, NY tomorrow to take on Manhattanville College at 7:00 p.m.
