WOMEN'S HOCKEY DEFEATED BY HOLY CROSS, 6-2
Jan. 16, 2009
BOSTON, MA - Freshman center Stacey Hochkins (New Boston, MI) netted a pair of goals and posted a plus-three to lead the College of the Holy Cross women's ice hockey team over University of Massachusetts Boston, 6-2, this evening in an Eastern College Athletic Conference East contest at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston. The Beacons fall to 7-4-1 overall and 6-2-1 in league play, while the Crusaders win their 10th straight game to improve to 13-0-1 and 9-0-1.
Junior center Maria Nasta (Andover, MA) netted her ninth goal of the season on a feed from sophomore forward Rachel Sousa (Woburn, MA) on the power play for the only goal of the second period to pull UMass Boston to within 3-2 at 11:13, but Holy Cross netted three unanswered goals in the third period to put the game away.
Hochkins' second goal of the night and 14th of the season gave the Crusaders a 4-2 margin with 4:13 gone in the third period, before junior forward Kathryn O'Connor (Brookfield, CT) increased the lead to 5-2 on an assist from freshman defenseman Brooke Miller (Falmouth, MA) and junior blueliner Katelyn Doherty (Toronto, ONT) at 13:23 of the final period. O'Connor struck again less than three minutes later when freshman forward Nicola Garat (Princeton, NJ) found her for her fourth goal of the year with 3:51 remaining in the contest to cap the scoring and give the visitors a four-goal advantage.
The Beacons got on the board first when junior defenseman Amanda Cianciulli (Billerica, MA) fired a shot from the point that freshman forward Kelly Gillis (Northford, CT) redirected for her seventh goal of the season at 6:40 of the opening period, but senior forward Stephanie Couzin (Chicago, IL) fed sophomore forward Jocelyn Kratchmer (Watrous, SK), for her 14th tally of the campaign, just 1:42 later at 8:22 of the first period to knot the score at 1-1 for Holy Cross. Couzin and Kratchmer then set up Hockins for the go-ahead goal with two minutes left in the first period and Garat potted a power play goal just 47 seconds later on a helper from sophomore defenseman Colleen Krmpotich (Minneapolis, MN) for her sixth of the season at 18:47 and a 3-1 Crusaders' lead.
Freshman goaltender Leah Hallett (Rocky Hill, CT) stopped 41 shots for UMass Boston, while freshman goalie Carly Dominick-Sobol (Syracuse, NY) made 19 saves to earn the victory for Holy Cross.
The Beacons will be in action again when they host Manhattanville College tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. in an ECAC East contest at the Clark Athletic Center, while the Crusaders travel to Newport, RI to take on Salve Regina University tomorrow at 8:30 p.m.
