GORHAM, ME -- Sophomore forward Sam Phillips (Scottsdale, AZ) tallied a career-high four points, including the game-winner to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston women's ice hockey team over host University of Southern Maine, 5-4, late this afternoon in an Eastern College Athletic Conference contest at USM Ice Arena in Gorham, ME. The Beacons win their third straight game to improve to 10-7-0 overall and 8-4-0 in ECAC East play, while the Huskies fall to 5-9-2 and 4-7-0.
Phillips potted her second goal of the day and seventh of the season with a short-handed score on a feed from junior defenseman Jazz Webber (Winslow, ME) at the 12:53 mark of the third period to give UMass Boston a 5-3 lead. Sophomore forward Katie Paradis (Rochester, NH) pulled Southern Maine to within 5-4 with a power play goal coming with just 1:51 left in the game, but it would be the last goal of the afternoon as the Beacons held on for the victory.
Both teams were scoreless through the first 14 minutes of the opening period, before UMass Boston put two goals on the board. Junior forward Rachel Sousa (Woburn, MA) cracked the scoring column for the Beacons with her third tally of the year coming on an assist from senior forward Maria Nasta (Andover, MA) and Phillips at 14:05 of the period. UMass Boston increased its lead to 2-0 when Phillips combined with freshman forward Alli Greenberg (Stoughton, MA) to find junior forward Kristen Smith (Beavercreek, OH) on the power play for her fourth goal of the season at the 16:54 mark of the first period. The Huskies cut the deficit in half with just 1:23 to go in the period when Paradis and sophomore forward Danielle Ward (Lansing, MI) set up sophomore defenseman Lauren Whiting (Hampton, NH) for the score.
Southern Maine carried the momentum into the second period with a pair of unanswered power play goals to take a 3-2 lead. Whiting knotted the score at 2-2 with her second goal of the contest and fourth of the season coming on a five on three advantage with junior blueliner Mary Vaughan (Brunswick, ME) and Ward getting the assist at11:34 of the middle period. The Huskies took their first lead of the game just 20 seconds later when sophomore forward Christen Hart (Saugus, MA) and sophomore forward Kylie Blasen (Okemos, MI) fed sophomore forward Joanna Gaube (Woodstock, CT) for her fifth tally of the campaign at 11:54.
The Beacons responded in the final period when Phillips needed just the first 11 seconds of the period to net an unassisted goal to tie the game at 3-3, before Nasta potted her team-leading 11th goal of the season to reclaim the UMass Boston edge on a helper from junior forward Lauren Duran (Woburn, MA) on the power play with 6:10 gone in the frame.
Sophomore goalie Leah Hallett (Rocky Hill, CT) stopped 22 shots to earn the victory for the Beacons, while freshman goaltender Molly Passerini (Wakefield, MA) turned away 13 of 18 shots in 52:48 of action for Southern Maine. Sophomore Kimmy Flanders (Monson, MA) stopped the only shot she saw in 6:29 of relief for the home team.
UMass Boston will be in action again when they travel to Plymouth, NH tomorrow for a 2:00 ECAC East contest with Plymouth State University, while the Huskies host Nichols College tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
