BOSTON, MA - Junior goaltender Leah Hallett (Rocky Hill, CT) made 47 saves to lift the University of Massachusetts Boston women's ice hockey team over Manhattanville College, 3-1, this afternoon at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston. The victory was UMass Boston's first-ever win against Manhattanville, snapping a 16-game winless drought since the program's inception in 2003. With the win, the Beacons improve to 9-8-0 overall and 6-6-0 in the ECAC East while the Valiants fall to 12-6-1 and 9-3-0.
After a scoreless first period, the Beacons jumped out to a 1-0 lead on senior forward Kristen Smith's (Beavercreek, OH) team-leading 10th goal of the season just 2:26 into the middle period. Smith intercepted a pass just outside the Valiants own blue line before skating in and converting a wrist-shot from just inside the left slot. Senior forward Katie Kirwan (Centerville, MA) got into the scoring column later in the period to put the Beacons on top, 2-0. Kirwan fired off a series of three shots, collecting her rebound each time and finishing just in front of the net with her third attempt at the 12:04 mark. Freshman defensemen Kelly Sharlow (Potsdam, NY) assisted on Kirwan's goal, her fourth of the year. Hallett was able to preserve the 2-0 lead by making 20 saves in the period and keeping Manhattanville off the scoreboard.
The Valiants pulled within one goal when senior forward Jess Scioli (North Reading, MA) notched her second goal of the year just 4:47 into the third period, cutting the Beacons lead in half at 2-1. Scioli was assisted by senior forward Shannon Coffey (Malden, MA), beating Hallett with a low slapshot just within the netminders near post. The Valiants looked poised to tie the contest and the Beacons gave them plenty of chances, committing three penalties in the final period to create three power play opportunities for the visitors but UMass Boston was able to kill off all three penalties to preserve the lead. With 1:27 to play in regulation, freshman forward Sarahanne Cavolo (Roxbury, NH) would add a huge insurance goal for UMass Boston to give the hosts a 3-1 lead. The marker was Cavolo's third of the year and was assisted by senior forwards Lauren Duran (Woburn, MA) and Rachel Sousa (Woburn, MA). In the final 1:27 of play, the Valiants pulled freshman goalie Mary Evans (Detroit, MI) to gain the extra skater advantage but Hallett and the Beacons defensive unit held on for the 3-1 win.
With the victory, Hallett improves to 7-6-0 on the season and during the game the junior made her 1,800th career save. Evans made 21 saves for the Valiants and drops to 5-2-0 on the campaign.
UMass Boston will be back in action on Tuesday, February 1 when they host Middlebury College at 7:00 p.m. in a non-conference match-up while Manhattanville is idle until Saturday, February 5 when they head to Castleton, VT to face Castleton State in a 3:00 p.m. tilt.
