BOSTON, MA - Senior forward Maria Nasta (Andover, MA) netted a pair of power play goals to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston women's ice hockey team over visiting Saint Michael's College, 4-2, in an Eastern College Athletic Conference contest this afternoon at the Clark Athletic Center rink on the campus of UMass Boston. The Beacons win their sixth straight contest and have won 12 of their last 15 to improve to 13-7-0 overall and 10-4-0 in league play, while the Purple Knights fall to 3-16-1 and 1-14-1.
Sophomore goalie Leah Hallett (Rocky Hill, CT) stopped her 10th shot of the day in the second period to break the UMass Boston record for saves in a season and finished the afternoon with 30 stops to give her 617 for the year. Amanda Boucher (2003-06) previously held the standard established in 2003-04.
Nasta's first goal of the day came just 41 seconds after the Beacons' first tally when junior defenseman Hannah Davis (Oakdale, MN) fed her on the power play at 6:36 of the first period to give the home team a 2-0 margin. Senior forward Katelyn Lajoie (Marlboro, MA) fired a shot on net for UMass Boston that was stopped, but sophomore forward Whitney Fraleigh (Fresno, CA) followed with a rebound shot that found the back of the net for her second tally of the season with 4:03 left in the opening period for a 3-0 advantage.
Saint Michael's responded with the only goal of the second period when freshman forward Melissa Coughlin (Franklin, MA) found junior defenseman Emily Paquin (Bowie, MD) for a wrap-around goal to cut the deficit to 3-1 at the 6:50 mark. The Purple Knights kept the pressure on early in the third frame when junior forward Kaleigh Ferrari (Millbrook, MA) took a pass from senior forward Sarah Landis (Cape Elizabeth, ME) and converted it into her first tally of the season with a shot that trickled past Hallett just 2:58 into the period to pull the visitors to within 3-2.
The Beacons answered with an insurance goal on the power play when junior forward Lauren Duran (Woburn, MA) set up Nasta for a slap shot that found the back of the net for her team-leading 14th goal of the campaign, 50th of her career and a 4-2 lead at 12:45 of the period.
UMass Boston got on the board first when junior forwards Kristen Smith (Beavercreek, OH) and Katie Kirwan (Centerville, MA) combined to set up freshman forward Alli Greenberg (Stoughton, MA) on the power play for her sixth marker of the year at 5:55 of the initial stanza.
The Beacons finished the afternoon going 3-6 on the power play, while Saint Michael's was 0-3.
Junior goaltender Alysia Goldman (Ballston Lake, NY) turned away 32 shots for the Purple Knights.
UMass Boston will be in action again on Saturday, February 6 when it hosts ECAC East foe Salve Regina University at 2:00 p.m. The game will also be the centerpiece around the Beacons' "Pink in the Rink" event to help raise awareness for breast cancer.
