SOUTH BURLINGTON, VT - Sophomore forward Lauren Duran (Woburn, MA) netted her team-leading 12th goal of the season to pull the University of Massachusetts Boston women's ice hockey team even at 2-2, where the score would remain through an overtime period with host Saint Michael's College in an Eastern College Athletic Conference contest this afternoon in South Burlington, VT. The Beacons are now 8-8-2 overall and 7-5-2 in league play, while the Purple Knights are 4-12-3 and 2-10-3.
Classmate Rachel Sousa (Woburn, MA) set up Duran's goal with just 3:59 left in regulation for UMass Boston. Sophomore forward Kristen Smith (Beavercreek, OH) put the Beacons on the board when she converted a feed from freshman forward Kelly Gillis (Northford, CT) for her 10th tally of the season coming on the power play with just four ticks left on the clock before the second period expired.
Saint Michael's junior forward Meghan Sweezey (Lynnfield, MA) scored the first two goals of the game in the first five minutes of the contest when senior forward Jess Tourville (Baltimore, VT) and sophomore defenseman Emily Paquin (Bowie, MD) set her up for the day's first score at 3:14. Junior forward Desiree Biron (Bow, NH) assisted on the second goal just 82 seconds later to give the home team a 2-0 margin at 4:36 of the opening stanza.
Sophomore goaltender Alysia Goldman (Bollston Lake, NY) was outstanding between the pipes for the Purple Knights, stopping 43 shots and holding the visitors to just one score on 14 power play opportunities, while freshman goalie Leah Hallett (Rocky Hill, CT) turned away 20 shots for UMass Boston, which owned a 47-22 shot advantage.
The Beacons will play again on Tuesday, February 3 when they travel to Cambridge, MA to take on MIT in league play at 7:00 p.m., while Saint Michael's returns to action on Saturday, February 7, as the Purple Knights travel to ECAC East opponent Nichols College for a 5:30 p.m. face-off.
