Box Score

BOSTON, MA - Senior forward Kristen Smith (Beavercreek, OH) notched a goal and an assist to help the University of Massachusetts Boston women's ice hockey team topple the College of the Holy Cross, 4-3, this afternoon at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston. The victory is the Beacons' first over Holy Cross since a 6-2 road win on February 10, 2006. With the decision, the Beacons improve to 10-9-0 overall and 7-7-0 in the ECAC East and the Crusaders fall to 14-8-0 and 11-4 in conference.

After back-and-forth action through the first 11:21 of the game, Holy Cross got on the board when senior forward Christina D'Ambrogio (Toronto, ONT) chased down a dump-in from junior winger Nicola Garat (Princeton, NJ) and poked it past UMass Boston junior goalie Leah Hallet (Rocky Hill, CT) to put the Crusaders on top, 1-0.

The Beacons wasted little time after the intermission, knotting the score at 1-1 just 42 seconds into the second period. Following a faceoff in the Crusaders' zone, sophomore forward Alli Greenberg (Stoughton, MA) tied it up with her sixth of the season from freshman defenseman Brittany Dawber (Southbridge, MA) and senior blueliner Jazz Webber (Winslow, ME). UMass Boston then grabbed the lead, 2-1, at 6:37 when senior forward Lauren Duran (Woburn, MA) stuffed in her own rebound for her seventh of the campaign. Senior forwards Rachel Sousa (Woburn, MA) and Katie Kirwan (Centerville, MA) picked up the assists on the go-ahead score. The Beacons tacked onto the lead, 3-1, just 1:46 later when Smith's backhand shot found the mark after a feed from freshman winger Katie Loiselle (Glocester, RI). Holy Cross bounced back with a power play goal at 14:10 to cut the deficit to 3-2. Junior forward Stacey Hochkins (New Boston, MI) tallied her 21st goal of the year with assists going to senior defenseman Emily Henry (Lumsden, SK) and sophomore forward Alex Campione (Townsend, MA). At 16:58 of the period, the Beacons reestablished a two-goal advantage, 4-2, after Smith ripped a slap shot that was blocked by a Crusader before senior blueliner Hannah Davis (Oakdale, MN) fired another shot from the point that was redirected into the net off the visitor's stick for her first goal of the season. Kirwan also picked up an assist on the play.

Holy Cross made it interesting with a score with 4:13 to play in the game to make it a 4-3 game. On the man-advantage, senior forward Jocelyn Kratchmer (Watrous, SK) tallied her 12th marker of the season with a put-back after sophomore winger Rebecca O'Quinn (Arlington, MA) and Hochkins made attempts to score. The Crusaders pulled junior goaltender Carly Dominick-Sobol (Syracuse, NY) late in the period to gain the extra skater advantage but the Beacons defensive unit held on to preserve the 4-3 win.

In net, Hallet made 32 stops to improve to 8-6-0 on the season, while Dominick-Sobol posted 26 saves in a losing effort.

With the assist in today's game, Sousa moves within four points of becoming only the fourth women in program's history to record 100 points.

Both teams return to action Friday, February 11 as the Beacons host the Saint Michaels at 4:00 p.m., while the Crusaders travel to Harrisville, RI to challenge Nichols College at 7:40 p.m.
