BOSTON, MA - Sophomore forward Kristen Smith (Beavercreek, OH) registered her first collegiate hat trick to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston women's ice hockey team in an 8-2 rout over MIT this afternoon in an Eastern College Athletic Conference East contest at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston. The Beacons improve to 10-8-2 overall, including 9-5-2 in league play to reach the double-digit victory mark for their fifth straight campaign since they began the program five years ago, while the Engineers fall to 6-11-1 and 6-11-1.

Smith becomes the seventh player in school history to notch a hat trick and the third this season for UMass Boston.

Smith's first tally of the afternoon came on the power play at 14:01 of the first period when freshman defenseman Brittany Usmail (New Hartford, NY) and senior forward Maria Guanci (Everett, MA) set her up to give the Beacons a 4-1 lead. Smith's second score increased the UMass Boston lead to 6-1 on a feed from Guanci on the power play at 6:17 of the third period and her third score and 13th of the season came on a helper from junior blueliner Sandy Parlato (Needham, MA) with 2:10 left in the contest for an 8-1 advantage to cap the scoring.

Freshman forward Kelly Gillis (Northford, CT) found junior forward Katelyn Pohlman (Newton, MA) for her first goal of the season to open the contest at the 5:05 mark of the first period for the Beacons. Gillis assisted on her second goal when she connected with sophomore forward Lauren Duran (Woburn, MA) at 9:25 of the first period for her team-leading 15th goal of the season, before Usmail and Smith combined to assist on junior forward Katelyn Lajoie's (Marlboro, MA) fifth goal of the year just 14 seconds later for a 3-0 UMB margin.

Sophomore forward Connie Lu (Sudbury, MA) put MIT on the board with her fourth goal of the season just 14 seconds after the Beacons' third goal to cut the deficit to 3-1.

Duran and freshman forward Whitney Fraleigh (Fresno, CA) later set up Gillis for her 10th tally of the campaign to give UMass Boston a 5-1 lead with the only goal of the second period at 13:38. The Engineers later pulled to within 6-2 on the power play when freshman forward Clarion Hess (Southlake, TX) fed senior defenseman Stephanie Brenman (Newton, MA) at the 7:46 mark of the final period, but the Beacons extended their lead to 7-2 with their third power play goal in four chances, courtesy of a feed from junior forward Maria Nasta (Andover, MA) to sophomore defenseman Hannah Davis (Oakdale, MN) for her fourth goal of the season and her 10th point of the campaign to set a new standard for points by a sophomore blueliner.

UMB now has 28 power play goals on the season to match a school-record set in 2006-07

Freshman goaltender Leah Hallett (Rocky Hill, CT) stopped 26 shots to earn the victory for UMass Boston, while sophomore Rachel Bowens-Rubin (Loretto, MN) made 35 saves for MIT.

The Beacons will be in action again on Friday, February 13 when they travel to Plymouth, NH for an ECAC East match-up with Plymouth State University at 6:00 p.m., while the Engineers go to Worcester, MA tomorrow for a 3:00 p.m. start at the College of the Holy Cross.
