BOSTON, MA - Five different skaters tallied a goal for the visitors including senior forward Sophie Leclerc (Barre, VT) who also added an assist to bring her nation-leading total to 40 points as No. 4 Norwich University defeated the University of Massachusetts Boston women's ice hockey team, 5-0, this afternoon at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston. With the win, the Cadets improve to 18-3-1 overall and 15-0-1 in the ECAC East while the Beacons fall to 11-10-0 and 8-8-0.
Norwich's junior winger Julie Fortier (Saint-Malachie, QUE) got the scoring started just 25 seconds into the game with her 16th tally of the season. Freshman forward Renee Lortie (Cornwall, ONT) hooked up with Fortier on a breakaway that led to the score.
Sophomore forward Jillayne DeBus (Howell, MI) added the second Cadets' score at 11:23 of the second period when she collected her own rebound, skated around the back of the net and beat UMass Boston junior goaltender Leah Hallett (Rocky Hill, CT) with a wrap-around. Senior forward Brittane Michaud (Lewiston, ME) and Leclerc were credited with assists on the marker for DeBus which was her 13th of the campaign.
Norwich put the game away with three tallies in the final period. Leclerc buried a shot in close from DeBus and Michaud at 1:31. Freshman forward Haley Gibson (Richmond, ONT) made it 4-0 at 8:22 when she was able to find the net after passes from Michaud and junior defenseman Amanda Wilks (Winnipeg, MAN), as Michaud finished with three assists in the contest. For good measure, sophomore forward Stephanie Invernizzi (Hingham, MA) tacked on her fourth of the season, unassisted, at 13:23.
On the afternoon the Beacons were able to hold the Cadets scoreless in five opportunities on the power play, while the home team was unable to convert its one chance with the man-advantage.
Hallett finished the game with 36 saves but falls to 8-8-0 on the season, while freshman goalie Joanie Plamondon (Pont-Rouge, QUE) made 11 stops in net for Norwich.
