GORHAM, ME -- Freshman goaltender Kristen Gresko (Phoenix, AZ) stopped 24 shots to backstop the University of Southern Maine women's ice hockey team to a 1-0 victory over the University of Massachusetts Boston in an ECAC Women's East game Saturday afternoon at the USM Ice Arena.
The win extends the Huskies' unbeaten streak to a season-best five games (4-0-1) and raises their record to 13-6-4 overall and 12-3-2 in the league. The win was USM's first against UMB since January 2004 and snapped a 10-game losing string against their rivals from Boston. The Beacons, who came into the game riding a four-game unbeaten streak (3-0-1), slide to 11-9-2 overall and 10-6-2 in league games.
Gresko stopped everything shot at her, including making 11 saves in the final period when the Beacons turned up the pressure. Gresko got strong support from her defense which cleared away every dangerous rebound. The shutout was the second of the season for the rookie netminder.
Sophomore Amanda Shorey (Ayer, MA) scored the only goal of the game at 12:49 of the first period. Shorey beat UMB rookie goalie Leah Hallett (Rocky Hill, CT) from about 15 feet out for her second goal of the season. Freshmen linemates Danielle Ward (Lansing, MI) and Katie Paradis (Rochester, NH) picked up the assists.
Hallett played well for the Beacons, finishing the game with 20 saves before being pulled for the extra attacker with 1:01 to play.
Southern Maine will close the regular season next weekend traveling to Salve Regina University on Friday (9:00 p.m.) and Holy Cross on Saturday (4:00 p.m.). UMass Boston will host Colby College in a non-league game on Tuesday (7:00 p.m.).
