RYE, NY - The University of Massachusetts Boston women's ice hockey team fell to Manhattanville College, 5-1, Friday evening at the Playland Ice Casino in Rye, NY. With the win the Valiants start out the 2010 at 1-0, 1-0 ECAC East while the Beacons drop to 0-1, 0-1.
After a scoreless first period in which Manhattanville outshot UMass Boston, 13-4, the Valiants got on the board 5:33 into the second period on sophomore forward Jess Kehoe's (Kemptvill, ONT) first goal of the year. The Beacons tied the score just 1:16 later when senior defender Lauren Duran (Woburn, MA) found the back of the net, beating sophomore goaltender Emily Cote (Saint-Hubert, QUE). The Valiants would regain the lead with just 2:16 to play in the second period when sophomore forward Katie Little (Victoria, BC) put home a power-play goal to give the hosts the 2-1 edge heading into the second intermission.
Little wasted no time to increase the host's lead to 3-1, scoring her second goal of the night just 0:11 seconds into the third period. Sophomore forward Mary Rose Morrison (Ridgefield, CT) made it a 4-1 game with her first goal of the season 4:47 into the final period. Junior defender Hannah Muskego (Neilburg, SASK) put the game out of reach on a power-play goal with just under five minute in the contest to make it 5-1, Manhattanville.
Cote would make the lead hold up, finishing the night with 16 saves. UMass Boston junior goaltender Leah Hallett (Rocky Hill, CT) kept the Beacons in it for most of the night, making 34 saves in the defeat.
The Beacons will be back in action on Saturday, November 6 when they travel to Harrisville, RI to take on Nichols College in a 7:40 p.m. match up.
