BOSTON, MA - Sophomore forward Lauren Duran (Woburn, MA) netted a pair of goals and added an assist to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston women's ice hockey team over visiting Nichols College, 6-1, tonight in an Eastern College Athletic Conference East Division A contest at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston. The Beacons win their season opener and improve to 1-0-0 overall and 1-0-0 in conference play, while the Bison fall to 0-2-0 and 0-2-0 in their first season of collegiate hockey.
Duran opened the scoring just 2:40 into the contest when classmate Rachel Sousa (Woburn, MA) found her to give UMass Boston a 1-0 edge and netted her second goal 2:15 later on another helper from Sousa at the 4:55 mark of the first period to give the Beacons a 3-0 advantage. Sophomore forward Kristen Smith (Beavercreek, OH) sandwiched her first collegiate goal in between Duran's at 3:03 of the first period on an assist from junior forward Katelyn Lajoie (Marlboro, MA) for a 2-0 UMB margin.
Smith added a second goal to her night when she came away with the puck on the Nichols' power play and fired a shot into the lower left corner for the Beacons' first shorthanded score of the year with 3:05 left in the contest for a 6-0 lead. Sophomore defenseman Hannah Davis (Oakdale, MN) also potted a pair of goals earlier on the night, to match her career-high, with both coming on the power play, netting her first on an assist from junior forward Maria Nasta (Andover, MA) and Duran to cap the first period scoring at the 17:32 mark for a 4-0 UMass Boston lead. Davis' second tally came courtesy of Nasta and Sousa for the first goal of the third period at 3:12, following a scoreless second session, for a 5-0 Beacons' lead. Sousa's helper matched a career-high of three for her in the game.
Freshman forward Mandy Manopla (Wellington, FL) prevented the shutout for the Bison with the program's first-ever goal on a feed from sophomore forward SueEllen Nault (Goffstown, NH) with just seven ticks left on the game clock.
UMass Boston sophomore goaltender Aly Garnett (Winthrop, MA) earned the victory with 13 saves, while freshman Christine Mazza (Dedham, MA) turned away 33 shots for Nichols.
