DURAN LEADS WOMEN'S HOCKEY OVER SALVE REGINA, 5-4
Nov. 8, 2008
BOSTON, MA - Sophomore forward Lauren Duran (Woburn, MA) netted a pair of goals for the second straight day to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston women's ice hockey team over visiting Salve Regina University, 5-4, today in an Eastern College Athletic Conference East Division A contest at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston. The Beacons improve to 2-0-0 overall and 2-0-0 in league play to begin the season with two victories for the first time since their inaugural 2003-04 campaign. The Seahawks suffer their first loss of the year and fall to 3-1-0 and 0-1-0.
Duran's second goal of the afternoon proved to be the game-winner when junior forward Maria Nasta (Andover, MA) and sophomore forward Rachel Sousa (Woburn, MA) combined to find her at the 3:16 mark of the third period to give UMB a 5-3 lead. Freshman forward Drew Chernisky (Valley View, OH) pulled Salve Regina to within 5-4 with her second goal of the day coming on a helper from freshman defenseman Kristen Aiello (Braintree, MA) and freshman forward Shannon Ellis (Colorado Springs, CO) on the power play at 12:25 of the final period. That would be as close as the Seahawks would come.
Sousa put the Beacons on the board with her first goal of the season on a feed from Nasta just 33 seconds into the game to set a new school-record for fastest goal from the start of the game, breaking the old mark of 53 seconds set vs. Wesleyan College on February 3, 2004. The quick start didn't faze Salve Regina as it netted the next two goals to take a 2-1 lead in the first period. Chernisky knotted the contest at 1-1 with her first collegiate goal coming at 15:02 on an assist from freshman forward Kathleen Roche (Boston, MA) and Ellis, before sophomore forward Gabrielle Gardner (Farmington Hills, MI) gave the Seahawks the lead with her fourth goal of the season on an assist from sophomore forward Molly Golden (Milton, MA) and senior forward Caitlin Campbell (Hingham, MA) at 17:49 of the opening period. UMass Boston responded just 64 seconds later when senior forward Maria Guanci (Everett, MA) and freshman defenseman Brittany Usmail (New Hartford, NY) found sophomore forward Kristen Smith (Beavercreek, OH) for her third goal of the campaign to tie the score at 2-2 with just 1:07 left in the first period. The assist marked the first collegiate point for Usmail.
The Beacons scored the only two goals of the second period to take a 4-2 lead, starting with Duran's first goal of the day on a feed from Sousa just 2:51 into the period and ending with freshman forward Kelly Gillis' (Northford, CT) first collegiate goal on a helper from junior forwards Sandy Parlato (Needham, MA) and Katelyn Corsino (Belmont, MA) at the 9:39 mark. Salve Regina climbed to within 4-3 when sophomore forward Kristen Cokely (Cambridge, MA) was hooked from behind on a scoring chance and then converted on a penalty shot for her first tally of the season just 63 seconds into the final period.
UMass Boston sophomore goaltender Aly Garnett (Winthrop, MA) stopped 23 shots to earn the victory, while sophomore Lauren Barella (Lennon, MI) turned away 12 of 14 shots in the first period for the Seahawks, before yielding to freshman Rebecca Simmons (Averill Park, NY), who made 18 saves in the final two periods of play.
The Beacons will be in action again on November 15 when they travel to Rye, NY to take on Manhattanville College at the Playland Ice Casino in an ECAC East Division A contest at 7:00 p.m., while Salve Regina travels to Harrisville, RI to take on Nichols College on November 14 at 5:30 p.m.
