RYE, NY - Senior forward Natalie Zitek (Charleston, WV) registered a hat trick and added an assist to lead the Manhattanville College women's ice hockey team over visiting University of Massachusetts Boston, 8-1, tonight in an Eastern College Athletic Conference East Division A contest at the Playland Ice Casino in Rye, NY. The Valiants improve to 2-1-0 overall and in league play, while the Beacons fall to 2-1-0 and 2-1-0.
Manhattanville netted the first five goals of the contest, including the first three by Zitek. Four of the Valiants five scores came on the power play, before UMass Boston got on the board with sophomore forward Rachel Sousa's (Woburn, MA) second goal of the season coming on the power play with 1:43 left in the second period. Junior forward Maria Nasta (Andover, MA) and sophomore defenseman Hannah Davis (Oakdale, MN) assisted on the Beacons' only tally. The helper for Nasta extended her point-scoring streak to nine straight games, dating back to last season.
Sophomore forward Shannon Coffey (Malden, MA) responded just 28 seconds later with the first of the final three Manhattanville goals to close out the game, including a shorthanded tally by freshman Michelle Wieczorek (Mountain Lakes, NJ) for her first collegiate goal at the 9:16 mark of the final period.
UMass Boston sophomore goaltender Aly Garnett (Winthrop, MA) three of six shots in 9:55 of action, before yielding to freshman Leah Hallet (Rocky Hill, CT), who turned away 13 of 18 shots in 49:49 of time. Senior Karine Turmel (Ste-Marguerite, QUE) made 25 saves for the Valiants, who were outshot on the night, 26-24.
The Beacons will be in action again on Sunday, November 16 when they travel to Worcester, MA in an ECAC East Division A contest at 7:30 p.m., while Manhattanville hosts Salve Regina University on November 22 at 3:00 p.m.
