WOMEN'S HOCKEY SKATES TO 4-4 TIE AT HOLY CROSS
Nov. 16, 2008
WORCESTER, MA - The UMass Boston women's ice hockey team let a 2-0 lead slip away, but hung on for a 4-4 tie with host College of the Holy Cross tonight in an ECAC East Division A contest in Worcester, MA at the Hart Center on the campus of Holy Cross. The Beacons are now 2-1-1 overall and 2-1-1 in league play, while the Crusaders' three-game winning streak comes to an end and they stand at 3-0-1 and 3-0-1.
UMass Boston netted the first two goals of the night, but Holy Cross came back with three unanswered goals, including a score by junior defenseman Katelyn Doherty (Toronto, ONT) to give it a 3-2 edge on the power play with her first goal of the season at 8:17 of the third period. The Beacons wasted no time knotting the score at 3-3 when junior forward Maria Nasta (Andover, MA) took a feed from sophomore blueliner Hannah Davis (Oakdale, MN) and netted her first goal of the season just 35 seconds later to extend her point-scoring streak to 10 consecutive games, dating back to last season.
UMass Boston reclaimed the lead when junior defenseman Jacqui Villani (West Roxbury, MA) took a wicked shot from the top of the right circle that junior forward Sandy Parlato (Needham, MA) redirected into the back of the net to give it a 4-3 lead at the 15:23 mark of the final period, but the Crusaders matched the score just 66 seconds later when freshman defenseman Brooke Miller (Falmouth, MA) and sophomore forward Jocelyn Kratchmer (Watrous, SK) found freshman forward Stacey Hochkins (New Boston, MI) for a shot that just trickled over the line just before the net came off its pegs for her fifth goal of the season and a 4-4 tie. Both teams were held scoreless for the remainder of the night for the tie.
The Beacons opened the scoring when senior forward Maria Guanci (Everett, MA) fed sophomore forward Kristen Smith (Beavercreek, OH) for her fourth goal of the year at 7:47 of the first period for a 1-0 lead and Villani and Guanci combined to assist on freshman forward Kelly Gillis' (Northford, CT) second goal of the campaign for a 2-0 lead on the power play at the five-minute mark of the second stanza. Freshman forward Amy Pfund (Tenafly, NJ) cut the deficit in half for Holy Cross with her first collegiate goal coming at 9:15 of the second period and Hochkins wasted no time on the Crusaders' power play, scoring just four seconds into it to knot the game at 2-2 with 4:54 gone in the third period.
Freshman goaltender Jami Cudmore (Balgonie, SK) stopped 44 shots in her collegiate debut for UMass Boston, while sophomore goalie Monique Gallant (Antigonish, NS) made 22 saves for Holy Cross.
The Beacons will be in action again on Tuesday, November 18 when they host Saint Anselm College at 7:00 p.m. at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMB, while the Crusaders host Norwich University on November 21 at 7:00 p.m.
