WOMEN'S ICE HOCKEY DEFEATS CASTLETON STATE, 3-1

Rutland, VT - The University of Massachusetts Boston women's ice hockey team defeated Castleton State College, 3-1, at Spartan Arena on Saturday afternoon in Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) East Women's action. The Beacons improve to 2-4-0 overall and 2-4-0 in ECAC East play. The Spartans drop to 2-6-0 overall and 2-4-0 in the ECAC East.

Just three minutes and 28 seconds into the game, UMass Boston jumped onto the scoreboard on junior forward Katie Kirwan's (Centerville, MA) third goal of the season.

Sophomore forward Samantha Phillips (Scottsdale, AZ) intercepted a pass in the neutral zone for the Beacons and skated through Castleton's defense with a breakaway opportunity. With Kirwan hustling up ice, Phillips dished the puck back to her teammate for her third helper of the season.

Netminder Katharyn Dembowski (Elkridge, MD), who made 35 saves on the afternoon for the Spartans, kept the deficit to just one goal with 1:49 remaining in the period with a great save. UMass Boston freshman forward Alli Greenberg (Stoughton, MA) intercepted a pass in the neutral zone leaving her with just Dembowski to beat. Greenberg shifted Dembowski out of position, but Dembowski recovered deflecting the puck over the net with her glove to keep the score at 1-0.

Castleton State tied the contest in the second on Denise Cardello's (North Babylon, NY) first goal of the season at 6:17. After receiving a pass behind the net from Nicole Ruman (Riverside, CA), Amy Costa (Bristol, RI) wrapped around the cage and fired a shot on Beacons' goaltender Leah Hallett (Rocky Hill, CT). Hallett made the first save but Cardello put home the rebound for a 1-1 tie.

The Spartans' momentum was short-lived, however, as UMass Boston junior forward Lauren Duran (Woburn, MA) lit the lamp at the 9:02 mark. Dembowski, laying flat on her back, made several saves before Duran wedged the puck into the net. It was the junior's third goal of the season.

In the third period, sophomore forward Kelly Gillis (Northford, CT) helped the Beacons pad the lead at 6:45 redirecting a shot fired from the blueline by junior defenseman Hannah Davis (Oakdale, MN) past Dembowski.

Gillis picked up her second goal of the season with the tally.

Castleton State freshman Jade Werger (Maple Ridge, BC) just missed cutting the deficit in half late in the period clanging a backhander off the post.

Hallett finished the contest with 25 saves in the win for UMass Boston.

Castleton returns to action on December 4 against Nichols College at Spartan Arena with game time scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The Beacons travel to Wesleyan University on December 5 for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
