BOSTON, MA - Junior forward Sandy Parlato (Needham, MA) scored a goal and added an assist and freshman goaltender Leah Hallett (Rocky Hill, CT) stopped all 19 shots she saw to record her first collegiate shutout to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston women's ice hockey team over visiting Castleton State College, 4-0, tonight in an Eastern College Athletic Conference East contest at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston. The Beacons extend their unbeaten streak to four games and improve to 5-1-1 overall and 4-1-1 in ECAC East play. The start is the best for UMB through seven games since it was 5-2-0 in 2003-04, while the Spartans fall to 2-7-0 and 2-5-0.
UMass Boston excelled on the power play, making good on three of five opportunities, while holding Castleton State scoreless on five power play chances and dominated the face-offs to the tune of 44-17.
Parlato assisted on the Beacons' first goal of the night, feeding freshman forward Kelly Gillis (Northford, CT) on the power play for her fifth goal of the season at 13:18 of the opening period for a 1-0 edge and scored a goal of her own on a pass from freshman defenseman Emily Brienzo (Greenfield, WI) on the power play at the 16:40 mark of the first period for a 2-0 margin.
Junior forward Maria Nasta (Andover, MA) netted UMass Boston's third power play goal of the day and her fifth goal of the season to extend her school-record point-scoring streak to 13 consecutive games on an assist from sophomore defenseman Jazz Webber (Winslow, ME) and sophomore forward Lauren Duran (Woburn, MA) at 14:17 of the second period for a 3-0 lead. Sophomore forward Kristen Smith (Beavercreek, OH) potted her team-leading sixth goal of the season to cap the scoring and give the Beacons a 4-0 lead with 11:07 gone in the final period of play.
Senior goalie Kalla Robb (Manchester, NH) made 26 saves for the Spartans, who were outshot, 30-19, on the afternoon. UMass Boston has not allowed a goal in its last 71:42 minutes of action.
The Beacons will be in action again on Saturday, December 6 when they host ECAC East foe Norwich University for a 1:00 p.m. contest at the Clark Athletic Center, while Castleton State travels to Newport, RI on December 6 to take on Salve Regina University at 2:00 p.m.
