BOSTON, MA - Senior forward Lauren Duran (Woburn, MA) netted the game-winner and junior goalie Leah Hallett (Rocky Hill, CT) stopped 37 of 38 shots to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston women's ice hockey team over visiting Colby College, 2-1, this afternoon at the Clark Athletic Center rink on the campus of UMass Boston. The Beacons win their second straight game in as many days and improve to 4-5-0 on the season, while the Mules fall to 2-6-0.
Duran gave UMass Boston the eventual game-winner with her third goal of the year when classmates Rachel Sousa (Woburn, MA) and Kristen Smith (Beavercreek, OH) combined to find her with 4:16 left to play in the second period. The Mules cut the deficit in half just under three minutes later when senior forwards Liz Osgood (North Andover, MA) and Meryl Poulin (Cape Elizabeth, ME) hooked up with sophomore defenseman Kathy Shei (Inverness, IL) for her first tally of the season with just 1:38 showing in the middle period.
The Beacons got on the board midway through the second stanza when sophomore forward Alli Greenberg (Stoughton, MA) picked up the rebound off a shot by sophomore defenseman Julie Gould (Flemington, NJ) that came off the pad of the Colby goaltender and scored her second marker of the season at the 12:53 mark of the second period to give UMass Boston a 2-0 lead. Senior forward Katie Kirwan (Centerville, MA) also picked up an assist on the play.
The Beacons were outshot 38-19 for the game and Hallett made 13 saves in the first and 12 stops in both the second and third periods to earn the victory. Freshman goalie Grace Dickinson (Northfield, IL) made 17 saves in the loss for the Mules.
UMass Boston will be in action again when they host Bowdoin College in the first round of the Fourth Annual Women's Codfish Bowl on January 2 at 4:00 p.m. at the Clark Athletic Center, while Colby travels to Colchester, VT on December 31 to take on Saint Michael's College at 4:00 p.m.
