COLBY COMES BACK TO BEAT WOMEN'S ICE HOCKEY IN OVERTIME, 4-3
Dec. 12, 2009
WATERVILLE, ME -- Kathy Shei (Iverness, IL) made her first collegiate goal a memorable one in overtime as the Colby College women's hockey team took a stunning 4-3 come-from-behind win over University of Massachusetts at Boston on Saturday night at Alfond Rink.
The Mules (2-3-3) trailed 3-0 and were headed for what seemed like certain defeat. However, Colby scored three goals in the final 9:18 of regulation to tie the game and then Shei scored a power play goal off assists from Liz Osgood (North Andover, MA) and Stephanie Scarpato (Osterville, MA) with just 10 seconds left in overtime.
Colby got started offensively on the power play when Marissa Simmons (Chestnut Hill, MA) scored from Scarpato with 9:18 left in the game to cut the Beacon lead to 3-1. Tasha Rivard (Newbury, MA) then made it a game with her first collegiate goal on an unassisted play with 8:51 to play. In a span of 27 seconds, the Mules were suddenly back in the game.
With Colby pulling the goalie for an extra attacker, Osgood tied the game at 3-3 off assists from Simmons and Kaitlyn Conway (Andover, MA).
Filomania Falcucci (Braintree, MA) made 12 saves in each period and one in overtime to finish with 37 stops for Colby. Sophomore goalie Leah Hallett (Rocky Hill, CT) made 40 saves for UMass Boston (5-5-0).
The Beacons scored one goal in each period to go up by three goals. Senior forward Maria Nasta (Andover, MA) scored 1:57 into the game from junior forward Kristen Smith (Beavercreek, OH), while classmate Laura Duran (Woburn, MA) added an unassisted goal just 2:35 into the second period. The Beacons got another early goal in the third period when senior defenseman Sandy Parlato (Needham, MA) tallied 3:11 into the period.
UMass Boston will be in action again on January 2, when it hosts Lake Forest College at 4:00 p.m. in the Third Annual Women's Codfish Bowl.
