SOUSA NAMED ECAC EAST WOMEN'S ICE HOCKEY PLAYER OF THE WEEK

CENTERVILLE, MA - University of Massachusetts Boston women's ice hockey player Rachel Sousa (Woburn, MA) has been named the Eastern College Athletic Conference East Player of the Week for the week of January 2-8, it was announced today by the conference. The award marks the second time in Sousa's career that she has earned the honor. She was also the top player for a week during her sophomore campaign.

Sousa tallied three points in two games with two goals and one assist. In the opening round of the 4th Annual Codfish Bowl, Sousa netted a pair of markers and recorded an assist to lift the Beacons in a 6-4 come-from-behind victory over Bowdoin College. Sousa's goals with 3:41 remaining in the third period snapped a 4-4 tie and proved to be the game-winning marker.

The senior has played in all 11 games for the Beacons this season, while leading the team with six goals, four assists and 10 points. She ranks among the ECAC East leaders with 0.55 goals per game to stand 10th and 15th overall averaging 0.91 points per game. She's currently tied for second among ECAC East players in short-handed goals and has notched two or more points in five games this season to lead the Beacons in multi-point outings.

Sousa has put together one of the most impressive careers in UMass Boston women's hockey annals, racking up 34 goals and 56 assist for 90 total points to rank fourth all-time in program history. She was named the ECAC East Rookie of the Year in 2008 after she ranked third among all NCAA Division III rookies with 1.27 points per game and third among league freshman in total points, while placing 18th among all players in the country in points per game and 11th among ECAC East total points leaders.

UMass Boston is currently 5-6-0 on the season, including 2-5-0 in ECAC East play. The Beacons will be in action again when they travels to Plymouth, NH on Friday, January 14 to take on ECAC East foe Plymouth State University at 7:00 p.m.
