April 1, 2011
BOSTON, MA - University of Massachusetts Boston Vice Chancellor for Athletics and Recreational Programs Charlie Titus announced on Monday, March 28 that the University has named Colleen Harris (Buffalo, NY) as its Head Women's Ice Hockey Coach.
"We were extremely lucky to have Colleen join our staff on an interim basis for this season and are even more excited that she has accepted our offer to join our staff full time," said Senior Associate Director of Athletics Terry Condon. "Not only did we get a very good coach in the deal but we've found someone who embodies the mission and values of UMass Boston Athletics."
Harris becomes the program's fourth varsity head coach after serving as UMass Boston's interim head coach this past season, leading the Beacons to a 14-11-1 record and an ECAC East Semifinals berth with just 16 skaters on her roster. Prior to joining the UMB staff, Harris spent a year and half at Nichols College serving as an assistant coach to both the women's hockey and lacrosse programs.
"After this season, I'm very eager and excited to have to opportunity to still be a part of the UMB family," said Harris. "UMass Boston is a special place with great support and enthusiasm surrounding its athletics; I can't wait to continue working with the student-athletes."
In her first season on the UMass Boston sidelines, Harris helped the Beacons capture some of the most memorable victories in the program's history including a 3-1 regular season victory on Jan. 29 over Manhattanville College for the program's first-ever win over the national powerhouse and eventual ECAC East tournament champions.
The former Boston College standout brings along an impressive resume as a Division I hockey player as well as a Level 4 coaching certification by the USA Hockey standards.
From 2004 through 2009, Harris was a member of the BC women's ice hockey team that captured three Beanpot Championships, made two NCAA tournament appearances while advancing to the Frozen Four in 2007. She was named the Eagles team captain for the '08-'09 campaign and was also honored that season as BC's Unsung Hero while receiving the team's Outstanding Senior award. On top of those honors, Harris received the Hockey East Sportsmanship Award following her senior season.
Harris graduated with a BA in Communications & Marketing and a Masters of Administrative Studies from Boston College in 2009. A native of Buffalo, NY, Harris currently resides in Boston, MA.
