Women's Ice Hockey Falls to Buffalo State in Season Opener
Oct. 28, 2011
BUFFALO, New York – Led by Brianna Murphy’s one goal and one assist, the host Bengals of Buffalo State College (1-0) defeated women’s ice hockey (0-1) by the final score of 3-1 Friday evening at the Buffalo State Ice Arena.
The Beacons, who are made-up of 17 new players, battled extremely hard throughout Friday’s contest. Despite trailing their opponents 2-0, UMass never backed down, and with less than two minutes to play in the third got their first goal of the season from Alyssa Sullivan (Medford, Mass.). Helping out on the play was junior Alli Greenberg (Stoughton, Mass.).
UMass ended the match-up with a combined 28 shots, 12 of which came in the third period. Buffalo State held a slim four-shot advantage over the Beacons as they finished the night with 32 shots.
Between the pipes senior Leah Hallett (Rocky Hill, Conn.) had a strong debut for UMass as she combined for 29 saves, while her Bengals counterpart Jordan Lee managed 27 saves to earn the victory.
Murphy ended the scoreless draw late in the second period on a shorthanded goal with less than two minutes left on the clock. After the intermission, Buffalo State notched their second goal of the night in the first two minutes of play. From there the two teams would continue their back and forth battle. Sullivan made it a one goal game with 1:54 left on the clock.
Following the goal, the Beacons pulled Hallett to gain the extra forward in hopes of tying the game at 2-2. Unfortunately, the Bengals managed to intercept the puck and send it sliding down the ice where it would find the back of the UMass goal, securing the 3-1 victory.
Women’s hockey will look to even the score with the Bengals, when the two teams face each other again tomorrow night at 7 p.m.
