Late Goal Pushes Women's Soccer Past UNE 1-0
BIDDEFORD, Me. – It took over 106 minutes and 25 shots, but on the 25 shot of the afternoon, Meghan O'Connell (Abington, Mass.) scored the Golden Goal, as UMass Boston (3-0) earned a 1-0 victory in double overtime over the University of New England (UNE) at Barbara J. Hazard Field.
O'Connell received a cross from the right corner from freshman Sam Bendick (New Egypt, N.J.) and headed the ball home just inside the near left post for the only goal of the game. It was O'Connell's first goal of the season and the second career goal for the senior captain.
UMass Boston had the better end of the chances throughout, as the Beacons held a 25-17 shot advantage and a 13-4 shots on goal margin. But the score would stay tied until the 106:03 mark.
