Women's Soccer Blows By Rhode Island College 2-0
PROVIDENCE, R.I.—In a chippy back-and-forth contest, UMass Boston (8-0, 2-0 LEC) prevailed 2-0 over Rhode Island College (1-5, 0-2 LEC) at the RIC Soccer Field Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Krista Ledin (Bridgewater, Mass.) returned from a one-game hiatus to score the game-winning goal, her 12th of the season. Fellow forward Tayla Andrews (Plymouth, Mass.) added the other tally, to give her nine on the year.
Sophomores Brittany Castillo (Yarmouth, Mass.), Caitlin Coleman (Willimantic, Conn.) and Amanda Pugliese (Pembroke, Mass.) each recorded an assist in the victory. Midfielder Sam Cristoforo (Rockland, Mass.) added the final assist, extending her point streak to seven games.
Kristen Spain (Quincy, Mass.) earned her third consecutive shutout by making three saves. The sophomore keeper extended her shutout streak to 320:32. As a team the Beacons are one-game shy of tying the program record for consecutive shutouts with four. In 2009 and 2010 UMass Boston shut out four straight opponents en route to 14 wins on the season.
The Beacons outshot the Anchorwomen 26-12 and had a 7-1 advantage on corner kicks.
Rhode Island College goalie Audrey Maia made 11 saves, including six in the second half.
After a scoreless first half in which the Beacons outshot Rhode Island College 10-5 and had a 5-0 advantage in corners, UMass Boston got on the board early in the second half. After earning a corner kick, Ledin headed the ball by Maia off a great cross from Cristoforo.
Thirty-five minutes later with the teams playing 10-on-10, Andrews received a through ball from Pugliese and dribbled around the goalie, before depositing the ball in the empty net.
UMass Boston will take a brief break from conference play Tuesday, when they take on regionally ranked Wheaton College at 4 p.m. in Newton, Mass.
