MULRY LEADS WOMEN'S SOCCER OVER SOUTHERN MAINE, 3-2, TO OPEN LEC SLATE

GORHAM, ME - Sophomore forward Kristin Mulry (Holbrook, MA) netted a pair of goals for the second straight match to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston women's soccer team over host University of Southern Maine, 3-2, in the Little East Conference opener today at USM Soccer Field in Gorham, ME. The Beacons improve to 3-2-0 on the season for their best start since they began 1997 at 3-2-0 as well, including 1-0-0 in LEC play, while the Huskies fall to 1-5-0 and 0-1-0.

Mulry's first tally of the afternoon came unassisted at 23:22 of the first half to snap a 1-1 tie for UMass Boston, while her second score came just 1:58 into the second half for her team-leading fifth goal of the season and a 3-1 Beacons' lead.

Southern Maine got on the board first when freshman forward Jessica Gassman (Kennebunk, ME) netted a goal on a long shot over the UMB keeper just 5:01 into the match. UMass Boston knotted the score at 1-1 when junior midfielder Nicki Finamore (Weymouth, MA) sent a cross into the box where senior midfielder Kristi Morales (San Francisco, CA) unleashed a shot from eight yards out that found the back of the net for her first tally of the season at the 15:07 mark.

Junior midfielder Heidi DeHaan (Lewiston, ME) pulled the Huskies to within 3-2 with less than nine minutes to play in the match with her second goal of the campaign coming on a shot off the far side post that deflected into the back of the net on a helper from freshman defender Shelby Turcotte (Lewiston, ME) at 81:16.

Senior goalie Jessica Penta (Revere, MA) earned the victory for the Beacons with two saves, while senior keeper Alison Bradley (Auckland, New Zealand) turned away two shots for Southern Maine.

UMass Boston will be in action again on Tuesday, September 22 when it heads to Fitchburg, MA to take on Fitchburg State College at 7:00 p.m., while the Huskies travel to play intra-state rival Bowdoin College in Brunswick, ME on September 23 at 4:00 p.m.
