DANBURY, CT - Senior Co-Captain Catherine Nathans (New Fairfield, CT) got things going early in the game for Western Connecticut State University when she scored her seventh goal of the season in the second minute of WestConn's 2-0 victory over UMass Boston Saturday evening at the Westside Athletic Complex.
With less than two minutes gone in the first half of play, WestConn's Jennifer Duran (Uncasville, CT) beat a UMass Boston defender down the left side and lofted a perfect pass into the box. Nathans elevated over another Beacon defender to head the ball over the outstretched arms of the UMass Boston goalkeeper for a 1-0 WestConn lead. The Colonials would hold a 14-5 advantage in shots for the first half, but the halftime score stood at 1-0.
In the second half, WestConn extended the lead to 2-0 when Lauren Matthews (Monroe, CT) scored her team-leading tenth goal of the season, also beating the UMass Boston goalie with a header off a pass from Kelli Veras (Trumbull, CT) in the game's 72nd minute. WestConn outshot UMass Boston in the second half by a 13-2 margin, requiring Colonial goalkeeper Shannon Cawley (Willimatic, CT) to make only one second-half save to preserve the shutout.
For the game, WestConn took 27 shots to seven for UMass Boston and held a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Cawley made three saves in goal for the Colonials to earn the shutout and her ninth win of the season. Junior Courtney Haroules (Littleton, MA) finished with 10 saves for UMass Boston, but takes the loss in goal.
With the win WestConn's season record stands at 9-3-1 (4-0-1 in the LEC), while UMass Boston falls to 5-9-1 (2-2-1 LEC).
The Colonials next game will be Tuesday evening, October 21st, when they travel to Kean. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m., while the Beacons travel to Buzzards Bay, MA to take on Massachusetts Maritime Academy at 4:00 p.m.
