BUZZARDS BAY, MA -- Three first half goals, including two that were set up by junior forward Stacy Leonard (Rockland, MA) for a career-high, lifted University of Massachusetts Boston to a 4-0 non-league college women's soccer victory over Massachusetts Maritime Academy this afternoon at Commander Ellis Field. The victory improves the Beacons' record to 6-9-1 and ties the school-record for wins in a season for them, matching their total from 1995 when they finished 6-10-1.
Freshman defender Brianna Cavanaugh (Belchertown, MA) gave visiting UMass Boston the only goal it would need 11:51 into the contest on a feed from Leonard for her first collegiate score, and fellow freshman Kristin Mulry (Holbrook, MA) extended that margin to 2-0 in the 29th minute on assists from Leonard and junior midfielder Kristi Morales (San Francisco, CA) for her team-leading 12th tally of the season. Senior sweeper Katherine Wall's (Arlington, MA) direct kick conversion in the 38th minute gave the visitors a 3-0 edge at the break, and an own goal off a corner kick in the 61st minute capped the Beacons' scoring.
Junior Courtney Haroules (Littleton, MA) and sophomore Ashley McRoberts (Merrimack, NH) combined on the shutout in goal for the Beacons by making one save each, while freshman Colleen Fissette (Dracut, MA) made seven stops in net for the host Buccaneers (2-9-0) as UMass Boston outshot Massachusetts Maritime by an 18-2 margin.
Massachusetts Maritime hosts Worcester State in a MASCAC outing on Saturday morning at Commander Ellis Field beginning at 10:00 a.m., while the Beacons host Keene State College in a Little East match on Saturday afternoon in Boston beginning at 1:00 p.m.
