KEENE, New Hampshire – Led by Melissa Dempsey’s one goal and two assists the Keene State College Owls (3-3, 1-0 LEC) defeated the University of Massachusetts women’s soccer (3-2, 0-1 LEC) by the final score of 4-0 Saturday afternoon at Owl Athletic Complex in the Little East Conference opener for both teams.
Dempsey had a breakout first half for Keene State as she scored the first goal of the game in 16th minute, then assisted on the Owls second and third goals of that half to give her team a 3-0 lead. The final goal of the match came in the 62nd minute on an unassisted play.
For the Beacons they also had their opportunities to get on the board as they combined for 13 shots in the contest, seven of which were on goal. Keene State managed just two more shots than UMass as they finished with 15 (11 SOG). UMass held a 7-4 advantage in corner kick opportunities.
Sam Cristoforo led the Beacons in shots on goal with two. Kellie Gomes (Halifax, MA) and Krista Ledin (Bridgewater, MA) each contributed two shots to try and spark the Beacons offense. One of UMass’s best chances came in the opening minutes of the second half, when Julienne McCuish (Mashpee, MA) cracked a shot to the near post that forced Keene State goalkeeper Megan Dempsey to come up with a very athletic save.
Both Dempsey and UMass goalkeeper Dani Perkins (Murrieta, CA) tallied seven saves in Saturday’s conference match.
Women’s soccer will return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Fitchburg State University for a 7 p.m. non-conference match.
