NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA - University of Massachusetts Boston women's soccer player Lauren Vargas (Rochester, MA) has been named Little East Conference Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for her play during the week of September 29 to October 5, it was announced today by the conference. The award marks the second time this season that a Beacons' women's soccer player has been named the league's top defender after senior Katherine Wall (Arlington, MA) was named for the week of September 15-21.
Vargas helped the UMass Boston defense hold opponents to just two goals in 200 minutes of action for a 0.90 goals against average and a 1-0-1 record. The sophomore was a key for the Beacons' offensive effort as well, netting her first goal of the season with just 30 seconds left in regulation to send the match into overtime at University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on October 4. The defender also helped preserve the 2-2 tie when she headed a shot away during the overtime session.
Vargas is one of just two backfield players on the squad with a goal. A graduate of Old Rochester Regional High School, she has played in eight of nine matches, while making six starts.
She has seen action in 25 career matches, while getting the starting nod in 20 of them and has scored a pair of goals.
The Beacons are currently 3-5-1 on the season, including a 2-0-1 mark in Little East Conference play to give them seven points and a spot atop the league standings as well a school-record for victories in conference play. UMass Boston will be in action again on October 7 when it travels to Brookline, MA to take on Newbury College at 3:00 p.m.
