BOSTON, Mass. – Led by Krista Ledin’s (Bridgewater, MA) third consecutive conference hat trick women’s soccer (9-4, 3-1 LEC) cruised past UMass Dartmouth (7-6-1, 2-2 LEC) by the final score of 5-0 Saturday afternoon in a Little East Conference match at Clark Athletic Center Field.  Saturday’s match was also the 2011 UMass Boston women’s soccer Breast Cancer Awareness match.

To show their support of the great cause, the Beacons wore pink uniforms for their crucial conference showdown with the Corsairs.  Saturday’s match got off to a real slow start for UMass as they struggled to possess the ball on both sides of the field.  However with just about 10 minutes left in the first half, the Beacons flipped the switch and took total control of the contest.

Helping the find their spark was Julie Nutting (Rockland, MA) who broke Saturday’s scoreless draw on her first goal of the year in the 38th minute.  After receiving a long-ball from defender Brittany Castillo (Yarmouth, MA), Nutting played the ball forward and dribbled right at UMass Dartmouth goalkeeper Krista Chauvin.  Showing total composure, Nutting beat Chauvin to the near post to make it 1-0 in favor of the home team.

Moments later Julienne McCuish got in on the action as she headed home a loose ball in the box to make it 2-0.  Tayla Andrews (Plymouth, MA) picked-up the assist on the hectic play.

In the first 45 minute of play, the Beacons held a 7-4 advantage in shots, while in the second half, the offense combined for 10 shots, while the defense held the Corsairs to a mere three.

Ledin, who was quiet for most of the first half, exploded in the second knocking home a pair of goals in the first 2:16.  Assisting her first of three goals was her sister Jamie Ledin (Bridgewater, MA).  With the ball at her feet Jamie delivered an absolutely perfect diagonal ball that met her sister’s head in-stride, which Krista then drove to the far post.

Kristin Mulry (Holbrook, MA), who was recognized before the match for becoming the first and only player in women’s soccer history to record 100 career points, set-up Ledin’s second goal.  Deep in the Beacons defensive third, Mulry cleared the ball into the Corsairs half.  Ledin waited patiently and just as the ball passed her took off on a one-on-one with Chauvin.  Ledin managed to get around the on-coming keeper and placed the ball in the wide-open net to make 4-0.

Following the early flurry, the Beacons offense fell quiet, despite their continuous pressure on the Corsairs back-four.  It was not until the 88th minute that Ledin secured her third hat-trick, as she made a great turn around a defender and crushed a shot to the far post.  Senior Molly Kuchar (Asheville, NC) started the goal scoring play on a perfectly placed throw-in to Ledin’s feet.

Saturday’s shutout marked the seventh of the season for freshman goalkeeper Dani Perkins (Murrieta, CA).  Currently Perkins is ranked second all-time at UMass Boston for shutouts in a season and in a career.  Chauvin ended the match with six of her team’s seven saves.  UMass Dartmouth also held an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Women’s soccer returns to action on Thursday when they host Emerson College at 3:30 p.m.
