Oct. 12, 2009

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA - University of Massachusetts Boston women's soccer player Taylor Massmann (Kingston, MA) has been named Little East Conference Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for her play during the week of October 5-11, it was announced today by the conference. Coincidentally, she earned the same award for the same week last season, being named the league's top defensive player for the week of October 6-12, 2008.

Massmann helped the Beacons keep their opponents scoreless for 180 minutes of action over two matches. The sophomore helped the UMass Boston defense limit Newbury College to just two shots in a 10-0 UMB victory on October 6 and contributed to a defensive effort that held Western Connecticut State University to just seven shots on net in the Beacons' 1-0 victory on October 10 for their first-ever victory over the Colonials.

The defender has played extremely well for UMass Boston this season, starting three of 12 matches and has been outstanding over the past two weeks as an integral part for the Beacons' streak of four straight shutouts and school-record string of 437:23 minutes without allowing a goal. UMass Boston's defense has not allowed more than three goals in a match this season, which occurred just once. The Beacons have held their opponents to a goal or less in nine of 12 matches, including five shutouts. A graduate of Silver Lake Regional High School, she has also chipped in on the offense with three points on a goal and an assist, including the game-winning score in a 2-1 victory at Rivier College on September 5 to open the season.

Massmann has seen action in 33 matches for her career, including six starting assignments. The second-year player has eight career points on a pair of goals and four assists.

The Beacons currently own a school-record nine-match unbeaten streak and are 9-2-1 on the season, including 3-0-1 in Little East Conference play to stand second in the league standings. UMass Boston will be in action again on Saturday, October 17 when it travels to Keene, NH for a showdown with the league's first place team, Keene State College, at 1:00 p.m.
