PLYMOUTH, New Hampshire – Junior Hieu Nguyen (Dorchester, MA) got back on the winning track, recording her 12th win over the year against Little East Conference opponent Plymouth State University (9-4, 5-3 LEC). Unfortunately the host Panthers earned the victory as they defeated women's tennis (6-8, 3-5 LEC) by the final of 8-1 Saturday afternoon at P.E. Center Courts.
Even with Saturday's loss the Beacons have secured a spot in this year's Little East Conference tournament. The tournament appearance will be the Beacons first since 2008, and will begin on Tuesday.
Nguyen's win was a hard fought one as she had to go to a tie-breaker to defeat Plymouth's Megan Cooper, 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-6). Also having a back and forth match was Wendy Steinman (Dudley, MA), who was edged by Elizabeth Silsby 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-4).
Mostly every match in Saturday's contest was close. In doubles play, Plymouth managed to sneak by with an 8-6 win at first flight, 8-4 win at second flight, and 8-3 win at third flight. In singles play Anitra Kloczewiak (Newton, MA) fell to her first flight opponent 6-2, 6-3. MaKenna Arrigo (Yarmouth Port, MA) and Samantha Counts (Bridgewater, MA) were each defeated in their respective matches 6-4, 6-2. Katherine Perkins (Dennis, MA) dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision at sixth flight to close out the match.
