RUTLAND, VT-- Despite strong doubles play and big days from Hieu Nguyen (Dorchester, MA) and Samantha Counts (Bridgewater, MA), UMass Boston fell 5-4 to Castelton State College in Castleton, VT Saturday afternoon.
Nguyen and Counts finished off their perfect weekend with a victory at number one doubles and wins in singles at number one and number two singles. But the Beacons only other point came from Imani Williams (Roxbury, MA) and Stephony Reeves (Dorchester, MA) at number two doubles. The Spartans swept third through sixth singles to come away with a tough victory.
The number one singles pair of Nguyen and Counts dominated their opponents in doubles taking an 8-1 victory, while Reeves and Williams were forced to a tiebreak in which they broke to win all seven points (9-8 (8-6). The Beacons had to forfeit at number three doubles and number six singles because they only had five players on the trip-evening up the match at two before singles play even began.
Nguyen moved to 4-0 overall on the season, when she won 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 in number one singles over Olga McIntyre. Her co-captain had a much easier time in staying undefeated, as Counts cruised to a straight set 6-1, 6-3 win. That would be as close as the Beacons would get though, as the Spartans won in straight sets at number four and number five singles and Williams fell in three sets at number three singles. She won the first set 4-6, but eventually fell 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
UMass Boston will have 10 days off before they play their home opener on September 13 against Johnson & Wales (RI) at 3:30 p.m.
