PROVIDENCE, R.I.—In a lengthy match that was far closer than the final score indicated, Rhode Island College (2-4, 1-3) defeated UMass Boston (1-3, 0-1) 9-0 at the RIC Tennis Courts Saturday afternoon.
After dropping two of the first three doubles points, Wendy Steinman (Dudley, Mass.) and Imani Williams (Roxbury, Mass.) went deep into a tiebreaker at number two doubles against Chelsea Brown and Gianna Vallante. When all was said and done, the Anchorwomen pair edged Williams and Steinman 9-8 by virtue of a 19-17 tiebreaker.
Singles play would feature three more lengthy super tiebreakers at number one, number three and number six singles. Hieu Nguyen (Dorchester, Mass.) took set number one at number one singles, before falling to Sadie Campanella 6-7, 6-4, 10-7. Steinman was even closer at number three singles, falling 2-6, 7-5, 10-8 to Tressa Cannata. And freshman Stephony Reeves (Dorchester, Mass.) just missed out on her first collegiate victory, as she dropped her number six singles tilt by a 7-6, 4-6, 10-5 score.
The Beacons will stay on the road and continue conference play on Tuesday when they travel to Gorham, Maine for a 3:30 p.m. match against the University of Southern Maine.
