BOSTON, Mass.—UMass Boston (2-4) broke out of a three-game slide in a huge way Thursday, as they swept Eastern Nazarene College (2-5) 9-0 at the Boston College High School Courts.
The Beacons earned the sweep over the visiting Lions for the second straight year behind great play from top to bottom.
Freshman Solveig Castelli (Precojo, France) and Stephony Reeves (Dorchester, Mass.) gave the Beacons an early 1-0 lead with an 8-3 win at number three doubles. Castelli would finish off her opponent fastest in singles play as well, as she took down Tannah Victor 6-1, 6-1. Reeves was nearly as efficient at number five singles, taking Monica Gonzalez down 6-1, 6-3 to give the Beacons a 5-0 lead.
Wendy Steinman (Dudley, Mass.) and Shihyu Yang (Taipei, Taiwan) paired at up at number two doubles to grab an 8-5 victory. In singles play, Steinman earned a dominant 6-0, 6-2 victory at number three singles, while Imani Williams (Roxbury, Mass.) breezed to a 6-2, 6-4 win at number four singles.
The Beacons also received tremendous play from their captains Hieu Nguyen (Dorchester, Mass.) and Samantha Counts (Bridgewater, Mass.). The duo defeated Eastern Nazarene's top pair 8-4, before Nguyen won 6-2, 6-4 and Counts won 6-1, 6-0 in number one and number two singles respectively.
UMass Boston will look to earn their first winning streak of the season Saturday when they host their in-state rival, UMass Dartmouth, at 1 p.m.
