Women's Tennis Earns First Conference Win
DANBURY, Conn.—UMass Boston women's tennis snapped a three-game losing streak and kept their postseason chances alive Tuesday afternoon, with a convincing 8-1 victory over Western Connecticut State University at the Westside Courts.
After earning just one point in their past three matchups against the Little East Conference elite, the Beacons (3-7, 1-5 LEC) grabbed their first conference victory and moved into seventh place in the conference.
The victory over Western Connecticut State University (1-7, 0-6 LEC) puts UMass Boston just one game behind Rhode Island College (2-4 LEC) and Southern Maine (2-4 LEC) for one of the two final spots in the Little East Conference Tournament.
UMass Boston's freshman doubles pair of Stephony Reeves (Dorchester, Mass.) and Solveig Castelli (Precojo, France) got the Beacons off to a good start with an 8-0 win at number three doubles. Reeves would finish off Jessica Arconti swiftly at number four doubles with a 6-4, 6-1 win, while Castelli only needed slightly longer to take a 6-0, 6-1 win at number five singles.
Samantha Counts (Bridgewater, Mass.) and Hieu Nguyen (Dorchester, Mass.) were the next Beacons pair to earn the win. Nguyen and Counts notched an 8-1 victory over Nicole Salamacha and Alyssa Panasci at number one doubles. In singles, Counts would earn a 6-0, 6-3 victory at number two singles, while Nguyen fell by the way of the tiebreaker in a 6-3, 6-7, 10-3 contest at number one singles.
The Beacons final pair of Imani Williams (Roxbury, Mass.) and Shihyu Yang (Taipei, Taiwan) had little trouble with the Colonials. The pair earned a hard-fought 8-4 win at number two doubles, before cruising in singles play. Williams grabbed a 6-4, 6-0 victory at number three singles, while Yang shut out her opponent at number six singles 6-0, 6-0.
